The Volvo S60 has long been the alternative for would-be Mercedes C-Class or BMW 3 Series drivers, and the model offers many of the same amenities found in other compact executive cars with the added bonus of Volvo's safety reputation. The 2014 Volvo S60 receives a face-lift after three model years on the market, and now sports more angular headlights and a wider front grille. The S60 continues to offer two engine choices, including a turbocharged 2.5-liter I-5 producing 250 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque and a turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 making 300 hp and 325 lb-ft. Both come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The five-cylinder S60 T5 comes standard in front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is optional. All six-cylinder S60 T6 models receive all-wheel drive as standard, including R-Design variants, which are tuned to 325 hp and 354 lb-ft. Front-drive S60 T5 models are EPA-rated at 21/30 mpg city/highway, while T5 sedans with all-wheel drive are rated at 20/29 mpg. The 2014 Volvo S60 T6 is rated at 18/25 mpg. The S60 proved to be a formidable competitor in our eight-way luxury sport sedan comparison, with a Volvo S60 T5 finishing in second place behind the BMW 328i and ahead of the Mercedes-Benz C250. That interior is subtly retouched for 2014, and features standard synthetic T-Tec-upholstered seats, automatic climate control, power driver's seat with three-position memory, 60/40 split folding rear seats, Bluetooth, USB and iPod interface, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Leather fatigue-reducing Sport seats are standard on T6 models and available on T5s. Other options include a navigation system, rearview camera, side Park Assist camera, blind spot monitoring system, and dual-screen rear entertainment system. The Volvo S60 is considered a Top Safety Pick + by the IIHS, with scores of Good in every category including the new small overlap front crash test. The S60 also received a five-star rating from NHTSA, scoring five out of five stars in every category.
